Viewing jpg's in Windows 7

When I attempt to view jpg image files from an external HDD in Windows 7, I
get an error message saying the it's an invalid image file. When I go to a
folder that I know is full of jpg images, the window reports that the folder
is empty. (I am viewing the files using Google Picasa.)

But, when I switch to a Windows XP hard drive and navigate to the same
folders on the same external drive, the pictures open fine (again, using
Picasa) and the other folders show all of the jpg files in them.

Does anyone know why I can't see or open jpg's on an external drive with
Win7 64bit, but I can in WinXP x86?

For clarification, in WIn7, some of the folders that I know have image files
in them show as empty, but the jpg's in other folders appear to be there, but
won't open.

Thanks.

Have you checked the support for Google Picasa? That seems to be the
cause of your issue rather than Windows 7.
Can you see the files using Windows Explorer?

You're probably right, Jane, it's likely to be a Picasa issue. But it's also
possible that the files have a minor corruption that is causing Win7 to
complain, since it's much fussier (for VERY good security reasons!) about
images. It could also be a permissions problem.

Might be way off here but did you install Google Picasa with-as an
administrator? Is Google Picasa a Win7 program or did you install in Win 7
in compatibility mode?

Have not experienced this phenomenon with Windows 7 and Windows XP. I
exchange hard drives and USB sticks with all manner of picture formats
on them between both systems, 32-bit & 64-bit, without any odd behavior.

I just upgraded to Win 7 / 64 and now all of the JPG files that I had saved
to an external hard drive using Vista 64 and 32 come up as "an unknow file
type" and cannot be displayed by any viewer. When I attach the hard drive to
another computer running Vista 32 all the files are there and easily
displayed by all file viewers. I believe Win 7 is in need of a service pak
to allow it to function with files that were not saved when it was running.
I guess we are stuck with running 2 operating systems until the service pak
gets issued.

If you're using a USB drive it may be your motherboard, especially if it
has nVidia chips. There are lots of posts about this problem over on
the Technet Windows 7 forum. I don't think there has been anything
pinpointed, but supposedly Microsoft and nVidia are trying to identify
the problem.
