viewing updates before install

I've searched google but I can't find a solution to this anywhere. On a
windows XP SP3 machine if I do start/turn off the box shows a line
saying: 'Click here to turn off without installing updates'. Problem is
I want to see what updates it's going to install before allowing the
updates as there are certain updates I don't want, but there's no-where
I can find to make windows display the updates. That pesky little yellow
shield is no-where to be found when you want it. In the security
settings I've always had a dot in 'Notify me but don't automatically
download or install them'. How do I invoke the yellow shield and make
windows display the updates?

The configure Automatic Updates to NOT download and install updates.
Configure it to prompt you that there are new updates. You can have it
prompt without downloading the updates or prompt after downloading the
updates. It's up to you how you want AU to work. If you choose to be
prompted, then they aren't applied if you say no. They are if you say
yes, so you already know what updates you allowed when prompted when you
later exit Windows which then wants to complete the installation of
those item (if you said yes to the prompt).

Control Panel -> Automatic Updates
Do not select the Automatic setting. Select either "Download for me but
let me choose" or "Notify me" to get prompted.

It probably isn't possible to back out of a shutdown when processes are
getting terminated to then get back to the desktop to show you what
updates are included in the pending list that you allowed before
(whether it was automatic or you said yes to the prompt).

Personally I select the "Notify me" option for AU. The download may not
be that small and the disk activity to store the updates could interfere
with your current work or generate a jerkiness in response of your host
if you use the "Download but let me choose" option. Using Automatic
mode means you relinquish control over the state of you host and let
Microsoft decide when to change that state and how to change it, and
since it is automatic means you don't get told what changes will get
made.

This works for me - maybe for you ? Mine is set to DL but notify before
install. When the yellow shield indicates DL's are ready, go to the update
site, run Custom, show other updates. It will then show you the list. Click
on the DL's to get the description and if it says "0 kb, DL'd ready to
install" you will then know what has been DL'd and can install or not as you
see fit.

thanks for your response Rubert. After reading your link it seems there
isn't a clear fix for this, you just have to wait until windows throws
up the yellow shield again. How long that takes is anybody's guess.

Hi TG,

If you click on the Windows Update icon in All Programs, that will bring
up the web update. You can check on which updates you have installed.

Also, if you download an update directly from WU, that will force the
shield to pop up to let you know that updates are now available (duh,
I'm already doing that...). So you can initiate an update without
waiting for the shield to inform you. You can also select which ones to
download or ignore from the site.

And if your settings are on "Notify me...", when the shield pops up,
click it and choose "Custom". From there you can uncheck any updates you
don't want. I believe you can choose Custom from the download window
and the install window, so you have two opportunities to deselect an update.

ok Terry thanks for this advice.

If you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, select CUSTOM & scan, you
should be offered the updates that haven't downloaded yet. After you
install them, you will not see that prompt at shutdown.
