Virtual Box and Vista Activation

Hi All,

I am running Vista Ultimate out of Virtual Box (a
virtual machine) for Linux. Is there some reason why
I have to re-activate Vista every time I update Virtual Box?

And, this machine is not connected to the Internet.
Re-activating has to be done over the phone -- truly a
pain in the neck! Is there a way to get Vista to stop
this behaviour?

vista is very picky about what "computer" its running on.. doesnt matter if
its real or virtual
vista just dont like changes...

XP is far more resistant to small changes... Vista wants to call mommy
whenever even a small thing changes..

this is very stupid.. and yes I agree its a pain in the posterior when you
have no internet connection..
some even have int. connectins but still vista does not activate via
internet... forcing people to do phone activations.

possible solution? Not many good ways I am afraid.. there are some hacks
cracks that hackers use
to have vista pirated and working without needing to activate all the
time... but those wont work with SP1 when it comes out...

(unless they make new ones of course)

It rather depends on what you mean by updating your virtual machine.
If sufficient changes sre detected by Vista it will require reactivation
just as it would on a physical machine if you changed a number of
components.
So like a physical machine set your VM up properly and only then activate.
Or if you are changing your config constantly for some form of testing etc
then do not activate as you get 30 days anyway.

Hi Todd,

Vista prompts for reactivation any time it detects a significant hardware
change. It thinks it's been installed on a new machine, so requires a new
activation. Evidentally, updates to your virtual machine software are being
viewed/detected as hardware changes. There's probably no getting around this
outside of not updating the software. And yes, you would need to continue
reactivating by phone.
