On a new install of XP Pro Windows update is trying to install an update for
Virtual Machine.

On trying the message comes up "This setup will only upgrade over an
existing version of the Microsoft VM.

What do to stop this repeating on booting up?

Should VM installed when Windows installed?

Do I need VM?

Lindsay

Hi;

Suggest you go here (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp) and
scroll down to the section for "The J2SE Runtime Environment" then
download/install that. MS no longer makes the Java VM, and it is not
included in XP. And, yep, you will need it to run many
applications/websites.

If you want the 'Real Deal' do this:
To Get Microsoft Java Virtual Machine if you have XP and are without it, You
need to install 2 things and ENABLE the 'Microsoft VM' in your 'Internet
Options'/'Advanced'. To get the 2 needed Downloads, get the MS VM 3805 first
(this gives you 'license' to update then to 3810), then the MS VM 3810.
Install 3805 first, reboot, then the 3810, then reboot...Go then to
'Internet Options'/'Advanced' and scroll to the 'Microsoft VM'. I check mark
all 3 items (belt AND suspenders) and reboot again.
The link for MS VM "Version 3805" (a MUST first if you've got XP):
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/msjavx86.exe
The link for MS VM "Version 3810" (install 2nd after a reboot):
http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...a04af2b34d.exe
That's it...takes about 15 minutes each for each download on 56K modem, burn
to CD if you can, in case the future is 'minus' any such sites as
these. They're disappearing. Download 'em into a 'New Folder' on
Desktop.Install the 3805, reboot, then the 3810, and reboot then the
Internet Options/Advanced and reboot. Done..
