Virtual memory setting help

I have a desktop computer HP model A6200N with 2942 mb ram, I want to
set my virtual memory what would be the most practical numbers to enter
in the initial and maximum size.

HP Pavilion A6200N Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor
5000+, 3 GB RAM, 360 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium)

Leave it alone. Changing the default is more likely to hurt you than
help you.

The old, but reliable, rule is to set your Virtual Memory:

1) 2x your RAM

2) AND "Maximum size" = "Initial size" (to prevent resizing)

3) *IF possible*, put Swapfile on a separate *physical* hard drive


In your case, I suspect you actually have a 3gb System RAM (portion
used by onboard video card), so your VM (Initial & Max) should be
6144mb (aka 6gb).



As to location of the VM (aka Swapfile), on my home rig it is on F:
which is on HD1 (C: & D: are on HD0).

Placing your Swapfile on a separate *physical* hard drive means it can
be used with less data-transfer load when using other hard drives.

In an era where we have multiple gigabytes of RAM, this rule is
ridiculous.
