Virtual network problem

hi, i think it might be something simple that i'm overlooking but i can't
seem to ping my default gateway from my virtual server

the virtual server is a MOSS evaluation vhd i downloaded from ms

i can ping both ways between the MOSS virtual server and the host os

i can ping the gateway from my host os

i've configured the MOSS virtual server to use my host's network adapter

to my knowledge no firewalls are running anyway

any ideas?
