Virtual OS

I recently built a new computer and installed Vista Ultimate. I plan on
installing XP Pro as a virtual OS. I'm new to this and was wondering how
much HD space to allocate for this install. Do you allow space just for the
OS or for added programs as well? Also, if I understand correctly, both OS's
actually run at the same time. Does this create a problem with resources, or
can you put one OS in down mode while using the other? I have a quad core
Q6600 and 4 GB of RAM. Hard drive is WD 500 GB. Any other tips or
information about this configuration would be appreciated.

When running a guest OS in a virtual machine....just treat is as if you
would any installation.

If you'd normally set aside 50 gigs for XP on your HD...
then just setup 50 gigs for the Virtual machine.

Those there is generally some type of performance hit on the guest OS...
on your hi-end machine I'd sure it will not be noticed.

XP pro...within the virtual machine will simply run like any other
application...
you can shut it down or minimize it as desired.


Most virtual machines have a setting for how much RAM you want the guest OS
to use...
by default, it may be lower than what's needed...so have a look at that

Ok...I am sure you will get a real kick out of installing a Virtual machine.
If you ever get stuck...just remember that it works just like a stand-alone
computer...
right down to the bios etc.

The space you allocate to your VM depends on what you intend to do with
that VM... if you intend to install a boatload of apps, the, yes, you
need to allocate more space. If you don't commit the allocated space
when you create the VM, it will use as much as it needs and expand, as
required, until it hits the ceiling of the space you've allocated.
Meaning, you allocate, say 10GB's to the VM but don't "commit" it... XP
takes, and this is a SWAG, say, 3GB's. Then you attempt to install 8GB's
of applications... won't happen.

Which VM app are you installing? VPC or VMWare?
