How do you edit a virtual pc hard drive image so that you can add files onto.
So that if you have say MS-DOS 7.1 running on virtual pc and want to add
SIMCITY 2000 to its virtual hardrive. Then you could run SIMCITY 2000 from
dos on windows vista.

And once simcity 2000 is added to the virtual hardrive how do I execute
SC2000.exe from dos or dos shell.

Thanks in advance.

A virtual PC is just that... another PC. You install an OS and programs on
it and run them there.
You can't access a program on VPC from Vista.
For more info, check the group
microsoft.public.virtualpc

So there is no way to edit or change files on the virtual hardrive. Because
when I boot up MS-DOS 7.1 there are drives A: B: virtual C: and then D: which
is my real recovery drive but it is readonly and A & B don't exist on my
eMachine. So how do I acess a disk or cd on dos because I can put the files
on disks but I don't know how to open cd's with dos.

D: is NOT your real recovery drive. A VPC guest cannot see the host's file
system. D: should be the emulated optical drive, assuming that you have
installed the cd driver and added the appropriate config.sys and
autoexec.bat entries. You have to install a program in the guest. You
cannot simply add files. Run the Sim City 2000 installer within the guest
like any other computer. As Dave says, the appropriate newsgroup is
microsoft.public.virtualpc. This one would be the same whether the host OS
was Vista, XP, or Windows 2000.

This is a little confusing I really not that much of a know it all. But I
have the SIMCITY 2000 files in a folder on vista. Virtual PC and the DOS
machine are on my flash drive. If I put the SC2000 files or for that matter
any other files how do I pull em up in virtual dos. I also want to create a
seperate machine and install windows 3.1 which I have the installation files
on a disk and as an isotope file.

In Vista, create a folder on the flash drive and call it COMMON, or
something similar. Copy the SimCity files into that folder.

Start Virtual PC, go to the Settings page for the DOS virtual machine and
set up a shared folder. Point it to the COMMON folder, and choose a drive
letter for it. Let's call it Z:

Start up the DOS machine, switch to the Z: drive, and you will see the
files. Run the executable (or installer, or whatever).

If you are talking about game files and not the program itself, then copy
them to a floppy and then when you are running the guest simply load them
from the floppy. If you do not have a floppy drive you can make an .iso
file (.vfd).

A folder must be shared (physical PC) and fshare.exe (put it on the DOS
system disk before creating the image file) must be running (virtual PC).
You also have to select the shared folder in Edit > Settings.

PS: fshare.exe is in VPC2004VMAdditions.iso
