Virtual PC 2007 RAM issue

So, I've got a computer with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (32 bit) Edition
on it, and I'm trying to use Virtial PC 2007. It may not make sense to some,
but I only have 1GB of RAM in it right now.

This is the problem. When creating a Virtual Server (using "Other" as the
OS), it only registers 510MB of RAM instead of the full 1GB. Because of
this, it won't let me set 512MB to the virtual, much less keep 512MB for the
actual Server.

Any suggestions?

Probably that is all the free RAM that is on the machine at that time.
You really need more RAM to be Windows Server and VPC.

You're going to have to go with less RAM for the VM.

Indeed. With 1G you have just enough memory to run the Server OS itself.
510MB free is as much as you are likely to ever see.

why dont u try selecting some OS from the list and find out the difference?
as bill said the present OS is using RAM as well

Selecting a different OS from the list does nothing except set a different
set of defaults. The OP would still have to install an OS in the vm to
check anything. He may be able to run his XP software using XP in the vm by
setting the vm's ram to 256MB or 384MB.

So, the computer had 2 sticks of DDR RAM, each 512MB. Virtual PC only saw
510MB total.

Filling up the RAM with 4 sticks of 512MB DDR RAM, totaling 2GB, Virtual PC
saw the full 2GB.

Already having an OS shouldn't take away it's ability to see all the RAM,
even if it's being used. I was wondering why it only saw 510MB of the full
1GB, especiall since it sees all 2GB when I have 2GB of RAM.

There such apparent inconsistencies when using various configurations of
VPC. For example, if you have more than 4GB installed on a 64-bit machine,
VPC will not allow you to set a vm's memory above about 3.7GB because of a
limitation in VPC (not related to the usual limitations involving devices,
etc). It doesn't matter that ample ram is available to the host. If all
you are concerned about is 512 v 510 I don't think I would spend a lot of
time on it.
