Visat and home networking

I just purchased a Dell laptop today. Has 2.1 GHz Core2Duo, Vista Home
Premium, lots of other great stuff.
Within 5 minutes I was able to network the new Dell with my other three home
office computers using wireless network (Netgear wireless router.) Of the
three other computers, two are older XP's and the other a Sony Vaio with
Vista Home Premium.
All I did was go to Network and Sharing Center and turned Discovery and File
Sharing On. That's it.
I was swapping files with the other three computers. No sweat. In 5 minutes.
It took me about 7 minutes to print from the new Dell to the home office
shared printer, but that was my fault because I hadn't clicked on the printer
in the "View computers and devices" and chose the shared printer to be the
Dell's
printer, too. My bad.
Morale of this story: Vista works. It works great. Much better than XP did.
The new Dell Vista is eventually going to replace one of my slow (and
outdated) XP's. Vista works great. Period.

Happy holidays!

You conveniently forgot a few things!
1. You would have HAD to change the Workgroup name in either XP or Vista
computers to the same name.
2. You have to install a Vista compatible Printer Driver in your NEW dell.
3. Did you set up XP file and printer sharing in XP?
4. The BS goes continues with you.

Not if the workgroup already used the default MS workgroup name, no, he
wouldn't.

Agree there.

I expect an apology.

And furthmore, idiot; unless he turned Password Protected OFF, he would have
to make exact same user accoubts on ALL machines.

Read how it is supposed to be done, you IDIOT.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, and no
identical usernames/passwords, you will be asked for a username and password
when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista
computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing
Wizard, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer
to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!).

In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network”
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File
and Printer Sharing.

No you don't. Vista and XP work just fine when on separate workgroups.
Putting them in the same workgroup just makes them show up in the
"Computers near me" list.

And in anycase, if the OP had accepted the default Workgroup name in both
cases, they would have been in the same workgroup anyway!

It depends on which XP version you are talking about. In XP Home, the
default was MSHOME. In XP Pro, it was WORKGROUP.
