I have been having the same windows update error code when trying to update
manually (the system seems to do automatic updates in background
successfully)! I have installed SP1 successfully but I am still getting the
same error code (I have checked and I do have KB947821 installed. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem and have tried to use the solution based in the
947821 article. However, I can't find "CheckSUR" to download at microsoft
Download Center.

Re-read the article and see how to manually obtain it. Unfortunately it
involves a registry hack.

I already have 947821 installed. My system automatically updates but I cannot
manually invoke windows update - I just get that damn error code all the time.

I finally resolved 80073712 errors today.

I ran the CheckSUR utility, and then reviewed its logs:

\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log

CheckSUR did not fix my problem, but the logs told me what it was, which was:

Checking component store
(f) Corrupt
Manifest CSI 0x00000000 \winsxs\Manifests\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-internetexplorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16609_n one_89a35f80d52d451d.manifest Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer,
Culture=neutral, Version=6.0.6000.16609, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35,
ProcessorArchitecture=amd64, versionScope=NonSxS Manifest: Empty file

---

I then went to the \Windows\WinSXS\Manifests folder, found the above file to
indeed be zero bytes, and removed it. (I had to take ownership of it to do
so).

After that, the update that wouldn't install (the IE7 cumulative update
rollup of the month), went in without a hitch.

So, in short, CheckSUR won't necessarily FIX all the problems it finds, but
if you go look at its log files you may be able to identify the problem file
on your own and thus resolve the problem.

I don't advise poking around your Manifests folder and taking ownership of
files unless you understand the consequences and/or have expert help.
Opening a support case with Microsoft is still the preferred method of
resolving these issues.

This fixed everything - I had a corrupt catalog and two zero length
manifests; after taking ownership of them and removing them my updates went
just fine. Thanks a lot!
