The memory address space size is the key differentiator between the two.
Windows Vista x64 supports up to 128 GBs of Physical ram, while Vista x86
supports 3 to 4 GBs depending on what the main board can support. Some other
differentiators in Vista x64 include, device drivers must be signed, Patch
Guard which prevents hackers from easily penetrating the kernel.
