Rebooted to blue screen.

Managed to uninstall the updates in Safe Mode, and have turned auto-update
off. All is well for now.

Anyone else have problems?

Toshiba Laptop, A305-S6837, 4Gig Ram,

Pertinent updates released this week include
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957321,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959108, and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959130.

As none of them are security-related updates, you do not qualify for free
support from MS. I suggest that you either contact Toshiba Support or post
in a Vista-specific newsgroup (e.g.,
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general).

You can always leave Automatic Updates enabled and set to the Notify Only
setting such that you could "hide" any of those updates or any other
updates.

Good luck.

No - I have four very different Windows Vista Ultimate machines - all fully
updated, no problems.

No Toshiba's though - so my first guess - driver issue.

Of course - you gave no information from the 'blue screen', so that is just
a guess. ;-)

I installed the updates again individually, and the one causing the problems
is
KB959108. The others installed fine.

The error is: Stop 2x 0000007f

That's not a security patch. Click to ignore it. Is this an OEM build?

Thread history via Google Groups (which appears to be a day or two behind
right now):
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...678fe777f035ae

<QP>
0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
One of three types of problems occurred in kernel-mode: (1) Hardware
failures. (2) Software problems. (3) A bound trap (i.e., a condition that
the kernel is not allowed to have or intercept). Hardware failures are the
most common cause (many dozen KB articles exist for this error referencing
specific hardware failures) and, of these, memory hardware failures are the
most common.

General causes of "STOP 0x0000007F" errors
[includes overclocking & drivers an/or BIOS in need of updating!]

The non-security update in question is:

An update is available that disables the collection and transfer of Software
Quality Metrics data by the Windows Portable Device (WPD) API:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959108

Run Windows Update manually then hide the update ("Don't show me this update
again").

Or you can contact Toshiba Support.
