Vista 64 not showing all 8GB

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a Gateway GM5048 with an Inte
Cortez motherboard. I just installed four 2GB DDR2 modules to take th
machine to 8GB. When I run msinfo32 or go to the performance tab of tas
manager, though, I only see 3.25GB available. The system propertie
window, however, shows that I have 8GB installed. What gives? Is ther
anything that I need to change in configuration somewhere

I looked at this thread:

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-genera...-ram-issue.htm

In that case the OP said that he fixed the issue by changing th
maximum memory setting in boot options. When I go to that same option
the maximum value that I can even enter is 3328. I normally leave th
option disabled, however

My video card is an nVidia Geforce 8500GT. Device manager shows i
taking up space between 3 and 4 GB. I though that 64-bit Vista wa
supposed to make this space usable? Am I wrong about that

Thanks
Paul Park

Hello Paul

Are you sure you are running the 64 bit Vista and not the 32 bi
version instead. To check press the "Windows Key (start) + Pause/Brea
key" and look next to "System Type" for the version

If you are running the 64 bit Vista, then see if you have the lates
BIOS version installed (flashed) for your motherboard

Hope this helps

Yes, I'm certain. That window says the operating system type is 64-bit
(which is what I installed, anyway) right below the line that says I
have 8GB of memory installed. I also upgraded the BIOS just this
morning. Incidentally, the BIOS shows that all 4 2GB modules are
present. However, I was just looking at the specs for that Intel
motherboard:

'Intel® Desktop Board D945GCZ Overview'

It says that the maximum supported memory is 4GB, so I suppose that
could be a problem. I guess my next question is what's a good upgrade
for that board?

The BIOS has to provide access to Memory Hole for 64-bit systems to access
all 8GB. It seems that Intel have not implemented this in the BIOS for that
board and they are unlikely to do so now.

If you want to keep costs down you should look for a board which supports
your current CPU and memory. If your processor is fairly old, you may do
better with a newer CPU. You don't say what speed the new memory is, and
that might limit your choice too.

Thanks for the info. The CPU is a Pentium D 3.0GHz with two cores. The memory
is DDR2 PC-6400. I'll do some digging around online and down at Fry's and see
what I can find.

Thanks again

Is the PAE switch enabled and the 3Gig switch disabled ? You need both of the latter to show more than 4Gigs of memory.
If PAE switch is not enabled it can show only a maximum of 4 Gigs. Same with the 3Gig switch.

So check if both are set correctly

See http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/GM.../6153sp2.shtml . The
maximum memory is 4GB. Probably the Gateway BIOS does not allow "Memory
hole" to be enabled: if so, the booted system will never recognise more than
4GB.

There might be a BIOS available which will work with the board and let you
use 8GB, but if is not an official Gateway BIOS you are at risk of finding
the board unusable after flashing.
