Vista 64 Ultimate

I have installed the OS fine with 2 gb of memory and now want to add the
send set of 2gb to go to 4gb. I have heard you need SP1 in order to do this.
I went to update to SP1 and read some forms that if all the drivers are up to
date it should come in the auto d/ls I have done all the automatic updates
and no SP1. All drivers on the system are up to date. I was going to just d/l
it and install mannually but read it is not a good idea as people have had
major issues like blue screens ect once they do this. And it is safer to wait
for automatic updates to do this to ensure system is in line with sp1.


What am I to do? I want my 4gb of ram.

I think it's perfectly safe to install SP1, Unless you're using Microsoft
Dynamic software that is affected.
As of the 4GB, Even if you have Vista 64bit installed, It doesn't mean that
you'll be able to use 4GB of RAM.
It's dependable on your computer's hardware and bios configurations.

Hi,

You don't have to upgrade to SP1 to install the additional ram, but you'll
only see about 3.2GB of it if you don't. SP1 addresses this so that you will
see all 4GB.

The OP is using 64 bit Vista, he/she will see all of the ram.

Ok thanks. So should I update to SP1?

If it does not do this through automatic updates is it ok to d/l it to the
desktop and install?

I heard of stories if you do you will get a blue screen of death.

I had SP1 download through windows update on my computer (running business
64) and it worked fine. Only really noticable difference is file copy is
faster. Personally I would wait till it appears on windows update for you
but go ahead and install the ram now.

Most of what you have "Heard" appears to be inaccurate.

If you had the 32 bit version installed then you would only be able to
use a little over 3GB of it and before SP1 the amount reported was the
"Usable" amount. All SP1 does is change that amount reported from
"Usable" to "Installed", it now shows 4GB, but you still can't use all
of it. Nothing has changed except how the system reports RAM. No 32 bit
operating system can "Use" all of 4GB.

Since you have 64 bit you WILL be able to use all 4GB and it would have
been reported properly, so the SP1 misinformation you were given is not
relevant at all.

As to adding more memory it is very important to have all 4GB the same
specification and brand - mixing RAM will always set performance to
match the lowest, so in some cases adding RAM could actually reduce
performance / speed / or reliability. The very best way to do this would
be to buy 4GB all at once from one place, preferably as a "Matched" set
and then trade in your existing RAM. You do not "Have" to do that but
sometimes it is easier unless you can rely on your dealer or buy from a
manufacturer like DELL who should know what is installed already.

That is not to put you off doing the RAM upgrade, you can mix and match
sometimes and get away with it, but just be aware that sometimes it
won't work and quite often have a negative impact.

Stories are what they are. You only hear the bad, not the good. It's best to
download through the automatic updates to keep the size down, but there's no
reason you cannot use the network install (full package).

Eventually, future updates will rely on updated modules in SP1, so for the
majority it's a good idea to install the service pack.

To access the full 4GB be sure to enable memory remapping in your BIOS.
This will remap the hardware and video virtual address space to beyond the
4th GB.
