Hey all

I purhcased Vista Home Pre and loving Vista, but I have a concern as to how
much harddrive space is being sucked up from my 500G drive with only the
following apps installed and I can not figure out where and why my hard
drive space is being used for..

I installed the following:
- Vista Home Pre
- XP Ooffice - Only installed front office, excel and word

I have no other apps installed..

And for these two apps, 72Gs are being used on my HD, my personal folder is
4.4G, so that still leaves approx 67Gs being used for windows, and office..

Does Vista have a backup system in place where it mirrors some data???? as I
am lost for words on where my hard drive space is being consumed!

thanks

Perform a Disk Cleanup and make sure to delete old
System Restore points.:

Click on the blue Vista start button and then on the Computer
entry in the Start Menu. Right-click on your hard drive and
select Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all users.....
More Options > Clean Up (System Restore and Shadow Copies).

A lot of it would be System Restore data. You can delete all but the last
Restore Point in the Disk Cleanup wizard. On the last tab there is an
option for this, but only do it if your system is currently working with no
problems.

67GB is a lot of used space though, so there may be some other files that
are taking all this space up. Try installing Treesize Pro, and run is as
administrator, by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Admin.

Here's a tip: Open my computer and right click on the drive where Vist
is installed. Then click on properties. On the Properties page, click o
Disk Cleanup button. Choose wisely on this page since it gets nuke
permanently. Also, check the size of thumbnails thats eating up space [
think that might be your problem]. Also, on the next tab named Mor
Options, Click on the second Clean Up button which will delete all bu
the most recent restore point. Again, make a sound decision cause once
restore point is gone, it ain't comin' back

Hope this solves your problem

Also, there is no harm in keeping the System Restore data there, as it may
come in useful for you, as long as you have so much space unused.

eating a lot of space

I don't get this ? are you saying you have 139 gig used out of 500?
if so what's the big worry?

Yes System restore and shadow copy. Default is I believe max 10% of you HD
space will be used.

Frankly other than making sure you've deleted any old window installations
from doing a XP to Vista upgrade i won't worry a whole lot. You have plenty
left.

Thanks alot Carey!!!.....

Cleaning up the "System Restore and Shadow Copies" brought back 50G of disk
space (went from 71G used to 22.7G) ...

How can I get more details on the purpose of "System Restore and Shadow
Copies" feature?

thanks again Carey!

Yes, it's called "System Restore." It's not true backup however, just
the System. Most of what you see being used up is taken up by it.

Resist the temptation to delete the restore points or turn off System
Restore. It protects you, and it would be foolhardy to throw away that
protection. Besides, the space would quickly get used up again, as new
Restore Points are created.

With your 500GB drive, you have nothing to worry about with only 67GB
being used. And to put things into perspective, with a 500GB drive
costing around $100 US these days, that 72GB is $13.40 worth of disk
space. $13.40 is a small price to pay for that protection.

Yes, it stores 'previous version' info. Look at properties of the file to
see the option to restore a changed file.
