I would just like to know, once and for all - the following:
Is the Mixer Device is no longer available in computers, because it has been
cut out of Windows Vista.

I have been looking at notebooks in all the price ranges and find the only
way to record computer generated sound with a Vista machine is by placing a
microphone next to a loudspeaker. Is this correct????

It depends on your audio adapter and it's driver capabilities. In Control Panel
> Sound > Recording tab, Creative has "What-U-Hear" and Realtek has "Stereo

Mix", that, when set to Default, allow you to record computer sounds.

I had the same problem, couldnt for the life of me figger out how to
record audo playing on a hp vista pc with realtek audio hadware, using
either reaper or goldwave. Used to be no problem in XP. Couldnt see
any mixer options that would allow this. Then playing around in the
control panel sounds menu, did a right click on empty space and voila
saw a 'display disabled devices' option and lo and behold there was a
hidden realtek mixer disabled by vista default. Once the realtek
mixer was selected then i could record in reaper by selecting the
realtek mixer as the input device.

M$ sure tried their best to disable and hide this feature, but it
seems it is still there.
