I just purchased a Dell Laptop and put it on a wireless network. I am able
to see all the files on the network from the laptop and able to copy and
paste from the laptop. My problem is I cannot copy or access any files from
the other computers on the network from the laptop. The laptop is wireless
and the other computers are hardwired to the router. Can anyone give me a
clue as to why I cannot access any files in the laptop from my other
computers? I have the files all shared and even have the firewall off on the
laptop. It appears that Vista is different than XP. When I share the files
it just lets me share the files between other users who may log into the
laptop but does not allow other computers on the network to access the
laptop files. Right now to me. Vista SUCKS. I can not even find any help
files from the explorer. How do you get to them??

Can you share the files if the Vista machine is a wire connection like the
rest of them? Can you share files with a XP machine that is wireless with
another machine that is XP but wire?

What router do you have?

Thanks for the questions. I will have to look into that and see if I can
connect the laptop with a wire. I am using a Linksys Wireless Router with 4
wire connections. WRT54G It is a broadband.

Mr. Arnold,
Hooked up the Laptop with a wire and still have the same problem. Can access
the files from the laptop to the XP machines but cannot access the Laptop
Vista files from the XP machines.

Just what is the error message? Is this a File Share you made yourself on
the Vista O/S? What Vista O/S is this?

I had a problem with two XP Pro machines at one time, where as, one machine
had no problems accessing the Share of the other machine, but the other
machine couldn't do the same with Share of the machine that could access it.

It turned out that the permissions on the machine that its Share couldn't be
accessed the Everyone Group account on the share over rode any user
account's permission on the Share, even the Admin account, and the Everyone
account didn't have the correct permissions.

The only way I could see the Share Permission button on XP Pro for a File
Share was to disable Simple File Sharing. And then I could see the button
and look at the permissions on the Share.

It's something to consider, if you're getting *Access Denied* message is
that you have some kind of permission issue. It took me sometime to figure
that one out on what was happening on the Share with *Access Denied*.

As Mr. Arnold has stated... sounds like a permissions issue. When you try
make the connection to the share, try using an account from the Vista box,
e.g., if the Vista box is named "Vista" and you have an acct named "Tony" on
it, then when you go to create the connection to the share on the Vista box
from the XP box, choose use another acct and put in "vista\tony" with the pw
for the "Tony" acct.

Keith,
Thanks to Vista I have to purchase software in order to access files from XP
machines. Something just smells.

Sounds very confusing but will give it a try. Does anyone on this newsgroup
able to just use the files on a Vista machine with a XP workstation on a
local net??? Hard to believe that Microsoft would make this so hard. If the
Vista can get at the XP files the XP files should be able to get at the
Vista files. Why do you need a special password from the XP machine in order
to access shared files on the Vista machine. Even when I share a folder it
does not give me the nice hand under the folder showing me the folder is
shared. There is some crazy dots in the folder. When I do set the share it
wants me to choose other accounts in the Vista machine that I am allowing it
to use the files. I do not have any other accounts on my laptop as I am the
only one that uses it. Thanks for the help and will keep fighting this
Vista.

Look up the Authenticated User Group account which is setting on XP and
Vista if NTFS is being use and find out what it means and how to set-up a
machine on how to use Authenticated User Group on Shares, which may solve
your problem of choosing which account to use.
