I think i've found the answer. getting so frustrated i decided to create an
ad hoc network( quite simple on vista and xp) this means you can lose the
internet connection while on this network but can switch between networks for
internet or between computers. however low and behold when i disconnected ad
hoc network and switched back to router network my main computer appeared on
the network page and i was able to connect.

sorry lost it again on router network but at least can switch between
networks to access internet or other computer

when on ad hoc network ,access xp computer on vista computer and create a
shortcut to this on your desktop .you should now be able to access xp
computer from vista computer from this shortcut even when on router network
