Just wondering when these will be released. I've heard that XP SP3 has
performance improvements, and VISTA really has nothing to offer?

Thoughts?

The Service Pack 1 release for Vista, does not offer any significant
improvements, which is typical of Service Packs. SP1 for Vista will enable
new industry standards such as better support for Wireless standards and
general improvements in performance, reliability/stability. Windows XP SP3
and Vista SP1 are expected sometime in early 2008, exact dates have not been
revealed since the focus is more on quality that meeting a dead line.

Microsoft is always striving to improve the quality of their products.
Windows Update is one of the great examples of this effort, since its
implementation, Microsoft has continually improved the service to deliver
improved experience for Windows, software and hardware devices. Windows
Vista SP1 is currently in testing as of this writing. It is expected to be
released sometime in the first quarter of 2008.

You can apply for the beta at http://connect.microsoft.com its not
guaranteed you will get in, its closed to the general public and is a
managed beta. If you own an MSDN Subscription you will be able to get access
to the beta at a later date.

As is almost always the case, nobody knows. They will be released when
they are ready. They are both *planned* (not promised) for early next
year, but don't bet the farm on it. Plans sometimes go awry.

Service packs are often mostly rollups of previously-issued fixes.
What's new in either remains to be seen. Anything you *hear* is based
on pre-release versions, and that too can change by the time it's
released.
