I would like to be able to dual boot either operating system.
I have separate disk partions and an image restore program (Acronis True
Image).
I put my sytem back to XP and installed Vista to the new partion. Everything
worked. However, when I restored the disk image to the Vista drive, it
wouldn't even boot. Had the choice of which operating system to run but kept
getting a disk error. Any suggestions on how to set it up?

Hello Russel,

The rule of thumb in dual booting is to install the newest operating system the last. So in your
case, you should install Windows XP first and then install Windows Vista. There are ways to install
the older OS last and still restore the boot-loader, but its not worth the pain.

you can run the vista disk to fix the vista bootloader and then download a
program called vistaboot pro that is free
and you can then tweak and add entries to the bootloader

Sorry Anando, but you are wrong.
In all previous OS dual boots, older OS 1st.
Vista has changed the rules. You can install it 1st, make another partition,
THEN install XP secondly.

The above is the link Russell needs

You are of course right Mick. Vista on first Partition, XP on second. Vista
then places the Boot loader and XP is added.

This goes the same if you load XP and Linux. Linux however picks up the XP
in its Grub Loader.

Long winded, so I would prefer to do it right first time.

Mick,

Do your research before spreading misinformation. You can ofcourse use Vistabootpro to fix things
later on, but why do you want to do things wrong teh first time ? Once you install Vista and then
try to install XP on a different partition, XP has no way of knowing that Windows Vista is already
installed and it will sabotage the bootloader.

Once again, I repeat for the OP. XP first and then Vista. Vista will recognise that a prior OS
resides on one of the partitions and will accordingly modify the bootloader.
