Is there a way to disable the auto-refresh of the files of windows explorer
in vista

this is super duper annoying.. I want a new file when I place it in my list
of stuff to be on the bottom, and not sorted automatically.. IF I WANT I can
press the F5 key.
This was the behaviour of winXP

so is there a solution to this?

Hello, as far as I know autoarrange applies only to the desktop,
when I tried doing it inside windows explorer that option is grayed out...
see screenshot http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8366/ccpp2.jpg
I dont have autoarrange on the desktop either...

Any other ideas?

Perhaps a registry tweak?

Hi,

Autoarrange is only available when you are using an icon view setting. List
or Details will not have it as an option.

It can be applied to both Explorer and the Desktop, but you must be using an
icon view settings.

I changed to Icon view, disabled the autoarrange, then switch back to
detailed view but this dreaded auto-refresh still occurs..

Do you understand exactly what im talking about? Let me explain better:

For example you have a zip file that starts with a letter B, and you use the
context menu (with winzip for example)
to right click> unzip it,
IN XP> This just unziped and placed the extracted folder on the very bottom
of the list, and waited there until you pressed refresh (F5)
IN VISTA> It autorefreshes and paces the Folder up, in aplhabetical order...

What this causes... and why its annoying? When you have hundreds of folders
and you unzip something, in XP you knew it was always on the bottom and you
could copy paste it somewhere else, but with Vista you have to "hunt for it"
losing time slowing you down when you are in a hurry to orgnanize the data
in the folders.

I know I can set the details view to show the newest type on top or buttom,
but that does not keep all the ZIP files together as if you have it in
arranged via TYPE for example.

What I need is a way to turn off auto-refresh in vista and make it work like
XP.

Perhaps someone knows...

Let me clarify my question

arranged via TYPE for example.

What I need is a way to turn off auto-refresh in vista and make it work like

I am open to all suggestions (I can use xyplorer the allows you to turn
auto-refresh on and off.. but I kinda like the vista explorer with the icon
views better)

Why would you extract a zip file THEN copy and paste it somewhere else? When
all you have to do is right click & drag it to where you want and select
extract here.

I know it doesn't answer your question but your example talking about
loosing time working with zip files just doesn't make sense.

Because I download 100 zips at a time for example, batch-unzip them, then I
want to distribute them among a lots of folder categories without needing
switch from folder back and forth one by one...

In XP you had all the new unziped folders on the bottom then you could send
them off to their categories,
now with Vista everything autorefreshes and the newly unziped folders get
mixed with the older ones on the top..

its a nightmare!

its how I want to work, and for what Im doing its the best way for this type
of thing...
