Looking for help with the Backup and Restore Center on Windows Vista
Ultimate. I had been backing up my system after each new program install,
and the process had been going smoothly... until now. I'm backing up
approximately 50GB of data from my 100GB internal drive, to a 400GB USB
external drive with over 200GB of free space on it. The process will proceed
for about 20 minutes, then stop. The error I'm getting is "A device attached
to the system is not functioning (0x8007001F)". The only references I can
find to this error on Microsoft's site are related to Video Capture cards,
but I'm not using one. In fact all other applications have been closed or
disabled prior to the attempt to backup, including my virus protection and
Windows Firewall and Defender. Yet I continue to get this error. Anyone
have any information on this error and what I need to do to get the backup to
complete?

Phil,

There is a cumulative update that addresses several problems
related to USB. You might want to try the hotfix.... it might help.
The first link describes the update. The second link is where you
need to go to request the hotfix.
Give them the KB article number 936003 and a valid email address.
You should get a reply quickly. They'll send you a time limited
link to download the update. The file will be password protected,
so be sure to copy the password they send you and paste it when
asked.

Microsoft has released a cumulative update rollup for Windows Vista. This rollup helps
establish a quality baseline for the USB core components on the Windows Vista operating system.
This rollup supersedes previously-released USB fixes and contains additional high-applicability
USB fixes.
