Can someone point me to a fairly simple, fairly reasonably priced, reliable
backup software that will back up files and folders from locations other
than the Vista predefined locations like Documents, Music, etc.

I need to do full backups on this data plus incremental backups to an
external hard drive. And I don't really need all the fancy stuff like
constantly running schedulers, etc.

Maybe Acronis True Image would be worth a try.

Acronis True Image Home

Acronis True Image Home 15 days trial

BounceBack which use to be included with Seagate external drives works
well for me and is very easy to set up and use.

You can customize several ways. At the basic level you tell it what
folders you want to backup. You can manually run a backup set whenever
you want or schedule one to automatically run in the background. A
"set" is some folder which can have multiple sub folders. You then
backup a single set or as many as you wish to. In other words you can
backup your images one day, do just documents or music another day or
do them all at once. One of the features I really like is it shows you
which of your original files you've deleted so you don't end up
backing up copies of things you've deleted then it offers to purge the
backup copies of such files you no longer need. Many other options
depending on which version you get. At the basic level which is plenty
for most people it is as simple as picking which folders you want to
back up, give the set a name, then pressing a couple buttons to
actually do it. You can add or delete sets (what you want to backup at
any time.

Since it makes byte for byte copies of files no dangerous image files
which can get corrupted and end up useless. I never bothered to
upgrade from the Express version and since I have in excess of a
million personal files that simpler version is quite capable and easy
to use. Actually very simple to use, fully menu driven.

As a bonus it totally bypasses all the Vista crap that slows down file
copying so it is very fast and can run in the background while you do
other things and not slow down your system at all.
