I'm using the backup function located in Control Panel. When I had a
hardware problem and had to reformat the hard drive, the backup was useless
because it said the computer was not set up for the backup. It also will
not work when the external drive is connected using an USB cable, but will
work in the HP bay for the external drive. Finally, I tried to transfer the
files onto a XP machine and it would not recognize the external drive.

Is there a driver I can download from MS that I can use on the XP machine?
Why isn't the drive recognized with USB cables? Can you recommend a good
backup program?

I use Acronis True Image for imaging the whole of my hard drive to a
removable USB drive. I have used Vista's Complete PC Backup (Vista Ultimate)
but soon dumped it when it started playing up, luckily for me I had a full
Acronis True Image backup otherwise I would not have been able to re-image
my drive from the Complete PC backup image.
