Vista beta 2 update problem

Everything has been fine since I installed beta 2 until this morning, and now
when I check for updates it searches briefly and the returns "Windows could
not search for updates" and reports error code 80070057.

I can't find anything out about this error - any ideas?

The next post in this thread includes todays activities in the windowsupdate
log file up until it starts repeeating itself with the same error. Theres a
different error which immediately preceeds the one which is now occuring -
the cause maybe?

Cheers,

Morose

Hi Morose,

The Updates are going to continue to fail with Vista Beta 2, because a
newer Vista Beta has been released. It is Vista Beta RC1, where they made
several improvements and bug fixes. The Updates are now geared towards RC1
not Beta 2 versions.

Problems with this betaware are dealt with in the appropriate discussion or
newsgroup - this is windows update.

Funny that this newsgroup appears in the windows vista help and support
communities site under "Windows Vista Newsgroups".

If that's as good as your replies get Antioch, don't bother - they're no use
to anyone and you're just trying to make yourself seem important.

And I second that... I am using the "betaware" and this is where it brought
me with the same problem that Morose is having...

Can you confirm the the solution is to download and burn a dvd?

The problem now I have is that yesterday's updates, one of which was a new
driver for my dvd player, blue screened on me and now I can't seem to access
the burner. Are there really no more updates for Beta2?

I also have that problem. I still didn't get my Windows Vista RC1 DVD by mail
(I heard they'll send them only on the 25th?). Now... what's the point of
blocking updates for Beta 2 if a lot of people won't have RC1 before
September 25? However, that's information I got from these newsgroups, so
it's not exactly official. I personally never got that so-called "email" that
was supposed to inform us about the release of RC1. Anyway, that's not the
point. My point is that updates should be available for Beta 2 until October
or something... but I guess it isn't such a big deal, if we're supposed to
get RC1 soon.

The problems that you experienced in the web interface means nothing to me
as I do not/will not use that stupid form of communication - its
old/slow/unreliable etc etc. Hence your double posting of your thread :-)
Tried it once and never again. Or you may not be using that discussion
groups search etc properly.

Insulting in newsgroups will get you nowhere - that is the only answer I can
give - take it or leave it.
I know nothing about Vista - it is betaware and I keep betaware off my one
and only computer.
I am certainly not technically minded enough to cope with the problems of
betaware and I am not a tester.
It would appear that you fall into this category as well as I - but at least
I have some idea how and where to ask about vista issues.
Just because it was not to your liking or what you wanted to hear is your
problem.
Your thread re updates for Vista is the third Q that has crept into WINDOWS
updates in the last couple of months.
I cannot remember reading any for updates in Vista.
The lack of response to your thread says something - it has yet to be
answered by any of the regular technically minded experts - perhaps they
feel your Q has been answered
The last Vista visitor was directed to the correct groups etc and was polite
enough to come back a say 'thx'.

However it appears to me that you have only yourself to blame in that I can
see you have not been keeping up with the latest form of this betaware - I
believe it is available here

http://download.windowsvista.com/pre...n/download.htm

With my little knowledge re vista, it would appear to me that the updates
you want cannot be downloaded because you are not up to date ;-)
But it didn't take me long to find out that possibility.

Just in case you are unaware of the vista services etc -

Vista support is here below

antioch - look at this : http://www.nintendodsgamenews.com/wvngss.jpg

You can CLEARLY see the Windows Vista logo, and the Windows Update section
being in the Windows Vista Newsgroups. Maybe it's new, I don't know. Fact is,
this was posted at the right place.

Second, the RC1 link you just provided is for NEW testers only. Downloading
the RC1 from there will steal a license number, therefore reducing the number
of testers. Some people, like me, ordered the Beta 2 by mail, so we have to
wait until we get RC1 by mail too. It seems Microsoft didn't send them yet
though. Saying that we have only ourselves to blame is just plain stupid
since we have to WAIT for the update.

You see... if we weren't supposed to post Windows Vista questions here, let
me ask you...

Why is the Windows Update group included in the Windows Vista newsgroups?
Well, on IE7, anyway.

Hi
Thanks for the link - I was hoping somebody might give it.
As I said in my reply to morose, I have not used the web interface for over
three years and then it was to post one thread which disappeared twice -
when it did get posted I was invited to newsgroups and I have not looked
back.
I do not have vista - would not etc etc as I have said.
I spent no more than five minutes doing Google etc as I felt I might obliged
to contribute a bit more. All I read to be honest was the bit about
upgrade - the ins and outs as you described were beyond my realisation.
As I had directed you and another to the vista groups, I would assume, as
time has passed and no other updates newsreader has responded, that others
reading this and another thread, have felt the problem has been answered.
The only other suggestion I can think of is the Feedback and Bug Reporting
links that I gave.
Sorry if you feel the response has been inadequate - but thanks for taking
the time to show me the link that caused your arrival here.
We are all learning as we go along. My mate is 79 and he still cannot get
his head round Win98 :-) - it pizzes him off that I manage with XP and I am
only a couple of years behind him.
I dare not tell him about vista.

Well well my aged friend, you are indeed what discussion boards name a troll.
Burning people just because they don't work the same way as you and without
knowing the full situation is naive.

If you know nothing about vista betaware, then why bother replying - it
obviously has nothing to do with you since you wouldn't be able to help. You
may not be able to understand the problems of betaware, but I am, if you see
the other thread of this name (yes that is a problem with the web interface -
not my fault), I've posted an identified the error codes from my update log.
That is about all testers can do when there is no published info on what some
error codes mean - they have to "discuss" the probable causes.

In this case it seems to be caused by MS stupidly pulling update support for
Beta2 before they ship the RC1 discs. Now I know that I am happy. My post
has worked, and the newsgroups have been successful again. A triumph one
might say.

Thanks for your help antioch... actually no... thanks to the people who gave
useful answers - you're all stars.

Morose

PS, the web interface has come a long way since you tried it, you might like
it now you never know. You get to rate peoples replies and everything.
