I just got vista, and aside from the fact I just dont like change in some
things, how is Vista better or an upgrade from XP? I had XP pro, and when my
computer died and I bought a new one, I had to go with Vista, and had no
choice except for vista home premium thanks to the option available near by.
I really havent seen anything in the program itself as a plus so far, and the
only real changes I see are the sidebar, and the fact that the system uses an
amazing amount of ram for something thats essentially running in the back
ground. So my question is, what is actually betterabout vista?

Hello,

this is a neutral list of new features:

I fear that this discussion will go very far and there will be many
subjective posts.
Make sure that you find facts, and not only opinions.

Thank you for the link. I think I am just having a negative experience with
vista and was looking for something positive in Vista, unfortunately your own
language in how you said to avoid opinion shows that the general consensus on
Vista may not be that great. As Im looking through I see a lot of
"technological" improvements in Vista, and improvements to the UI the only
problem is, a lot of these additions have come with sacrifices(check the
sound improvements, and go look at some of the higher end sound cards that
are not, and may not eve be compatible with windows, on a basic level its an
improvement, in the end its a big downgrade) And dramatically increased
system requirements. Also, from what Im slowly seeing and learning, many of
the huge UI and display advancements are only available in Vista Ultimate,
such as the higher end parts of Aero and a few other things.

For you - maybe nothing about it is better. It is as personal as your choice
of a vehicle. You may get a Lexus and I may think it is no better than my
Ford.

Hello,

you're welcome. The issue is that in the past, discussions about the quality
of improvements in Vista and Vista itself here very often ended in conflicts
between people who love it and people who hate Vista. I would never want to
avoid opinion, but I fear that there will be these clashes (again).

Please fill me in on how Ultimate looks different/better than other
versions of Vista. I had no idea that aero in Home Premium looks
inferior to aero in Ultimate.

One difference there, you have a choice of getting a ford, which on a side
note, Im excited to get my new truck, I didnt have a choice of getting XP,
and to get ultimate when I got my computer would be kind of like saying well,
we'll sell you this ford, but to get the engine you want, your gonna have to
buy the truck, and then the engine you want for it, and swap it out on your
own time.

That's a very good question. I ran Vista for a while and went back to XP
which I much prefer. Before making a choice about what you do, I would like
that offer the following ideas, which made Vista slightly more tolerable for
me.

1. Don't assume that because it's "Windows", things will work the way they
always have done. A fair amount of the underlying structures have been, at
least, spruced-up and updated.

2. Try to do things the "Vista way". While I think it's very wrong that you
should have to fight the OS to get it doing what you want, I do think that
while you're using a new OS you should try and go along with the flow, at
least until you totally understand what is happening. To use a popular
example, quite a few people have turned off Vista's UAC because they heard
it was "bad" or because it got in their way over something or other, only to
find turning this feature caused as many problems as it solved.
