Its fundamentally better:

Better Security
Better Search
Better Organization
Better Multimedia
Better Visuals
Richer built in applications and features

Jacob,

You will get dozens of responses, pro and con.

I, personally, have used Vista Ultimate on my new computer since March 31,
with no hickups. In looking back at the introduction of Windows XP
Professional, I performed a clean install of the retail version on my
computer. The only problem was the (premature, in my opinion) obsolescence
of an audio card.

Our Computer Club has several computers with Windows Vista Home Premium. No
problems. We successfully taught five new Vista classes to a packed house.

I am a volunteer and do House Calls for the club, 5 or six times a week. All
of our members are residents in a community of 55+ age restrictions. They
seem to take the changes in stride, not demanding instant gratification, but
willing to learn where to find functions that are changed or simply renamed.
None have yet asked how to go back to XP.

Some of the things that I specifically like are:
1. Scheduled background Defragmentation.
2. Rapid search (after the initial indexing of the 300GB of files that were
moved from the XP machine)
3. The Aero is pretty, but nothing more.
4. Scheduled Windows Backups to a USB hard drive runs flawlessly. I have
successfully recovered a file to see if it really works.

One person's opinion.

My opinion and that of a lot of other consultants is that it is not yet
ready. We advise our clients to avoid vista.

It works relatively well here as I've had near stellar performance from
Vista. I run software new and old and all my hardware runs with it. So
Windows Vista gets an A+.

The only mention is that one piece of hardware [older cheap Logitech Webcam]
requires a beta Logitech driver no longer available [although it does exist
and it does run the Webcam - that it is not available is Logitech's
decision]. But since I've abandoned that webcam for a much better SONY
camera it doesn't matter to me - though I thought I should mention it.

Other thoughts:

For a young family, Vista should be a no-brainer as the Parental Controls
are built in and easy to use.

The new Windows Explorer makes traversing the folder hierarchy very quick
and easy [which speeds up work for someone working with many files and
folders].

The new games are very nice and I like the Full System Backup utility.

Saucy

Without getting into too much detail, the gist is that Vista is not ready
for primetime. There are too may programs and hardware that are not
compatible with Vista. I switched back to XP on my home system. I'll give
Vista another shot when SP1 comes out. If I could get all my programs and
hardware to work with Vista, I would use it, but that's a big "IF."

Vista has a better media centre than XP mce.
I have just tried Vista on my XP mce machine and have ordered the upgrade.

I am not upgrading my other XP laptop as I don't see enough of an advantage
to justify the cost although I would if it were cheap.

Vista is very frustrating. Most things are slower, copying large files,
working with development tools on Vista sometimes are a challenge. I think
Microsoft could have used another 6-12 months of development before
releasing Vista.

I have it on test machine, but most of my REAL work is still done with XP.
Whenever I want to play, I boot up Vista, then using it reminds me of how
nice XP is.

What ever you do, stay away from Ubuntu !
