Vista bootup - what's normal screen? logo?

I've checked and General is "normal" and boot is not ticked...
I get about 15 secs of blackness, 5 secs of progress bar at the bottom,
another 10 secs of blackness and then Vista.

If I tick no gui in boot, I get "aurora" for the whole duration with no
progress bar.

Is this normal?

I haven't modded windows.exe.mui yet... should I?

tia!

Yes that is what happens. This uses winload.exe for the boot screen. You can
customize this image by using the boot logo generator i am linking here. It's
pretty nifty.

Thanks. I apparently know nothing about changing security levels, because
even as super admin (net ueser ... /active:yes) I am unable to rename the
current winload.exe.mui . Can you give me a clue? I've been successful
changing other things - more of a non-system nature. I am sole user on my
computer and normally log in with my admin logon (not super admin).

There is a way you can turn on the more colorful boot background. From system properties > startup.

Well, in en-US, I renamed the old one, copied in the new one, but I still
get the old aurora one.......

a I couldn't figure out how it worked.
b It's for logon screens, not bootup screens...
