vista built in dvd burn very very slow

Is anyone else experiencing very slow cd/dvd burning using vistas built in
burning? A 100mb folder takes about 2 hours to burn to DVD-RW rather than a
few minutes.

Also vista seems very slow just duplicating a folder of just a few Mb of
files. It's no where near as bad as buring a cd/dvd but it still takes 30
secs 'calculating' before it does anything.

My laptop is a Toshiba satellite p100 and came preinstalled with vista prem.
It has a T5200 core 2 and 2Gb ram.

I just copied my Outlook.pst to a DVD-RW, 354MB in 90 seconds. I'm now
copying a sub-folder of the Documents folder, 409MB with close to 7000 items
and given the present rate of copy and the estimated time remaining, it
should take a total of 15 minutes. I'm doing this on a desktop with 2GB of
ram, HyperThreaded P4, 3.6Ghz and a graphics card with 256MB of dedicated
onboard ram of its own.

Unless you have a tremendous number of items in that folder, my guess would
be that your laptop may be in a power saving mode. This is especially true
if you are running off the battery instead of AC although it could still be
in power saving mode even on AC. I would try turning off any power saving
features of your laptop and try copying the folder again and see how long it
takes.

Using vista Live file system 234mb/4330 files took 25 minutes to burn dvd+rw
4x

Using vista mastered system 234mb/4330 files took 17 minutes (12 min
preparation + 5 min burn) to burn dvd+rw 4x

Using toshiba disc creator 234mb/4330 files took 90 seconds to burn dvd+rw 4x

why could vista be so much slower?

I don't know because I'm not experiencing the same slowdown. Even with the
laptop plugged in, you need to be sure the power saving features are turned
off.

Power saving would seem to me to be the most likely difference between our
two setups that might be causing a delay. Beyond that, we would likely need
to dig into other software you might have installed that might be hogging
resources, looking at the types of files being copied as well as the rated
speed of your burner and the rated speed of the media you are using.

Upon re-reading your post, I see you burned to 4x dvd+RW and used third
party software for the burn that took 90 seconds. I'm not using third party
software so I can't make a comparison though with a similar size file as
opposed to a multi-file folder, I did burn that file in 90 seconds using
Vista Live File system.

The only other thing I can think of is it has been reported there are some
DRM issues with vista and file copying and it may be having an impact on
what you are doing. There have been several posts in this newsgroup about
this.

As you noticed a 3rd party app performs very much better than vista's inbuilt
burner.

I cant see this being a DRM issue as the files I am burning are a mixture of
my own photos and docs not music/video that might have DRM rights.

How would Vista KNOW that? I suspect Vista in the background is ALWAYS
checking for DRM violations, hence why all it's file handling
regardless of copying/moving files or even burning files is way slower
that it needs to be or is in many other applications.

George Orwell was right with big government looking over your shoulder
