Vista: Cannot install critical KB952709

I'm having trouble installing critical update KB952709. The installation goes
through a number of steps:
1) installation of the update -> ok, system reboots
2) configuring the update -> ok, system reboots
3) more configuration -> ok, system reboots
After the last one, some DOS like messages appear. They go by really fast
but seem to be registry related.

After the final reboot a message appears that the configuration of the
update has failed and it reverts to its previous state.

The message in Windows Update names error 80004005. When I look into the
logs it says something about not being able to set the update to a stable
state.

I know I am not the only one with this problem. I have found several posts
about this one but none of the solutions work. I have disabled the virus
scanner and firewall, restarted the BITS services and so on.

I am running Vista Home Premium that came preinstalled on my HP Pavillion
desktop.

I have now hidden the update just to avoid having to go through the failing
update process every day but I would rather implement a solution and have the
update installed.

Any suggestions?

Henk

Engel,

Thanks for your reply. This article however does not solve my problem.

Just a question! => Are you running Vista or Vista SP1?

What anti-virus application or security suite (& version) is installed?
What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party
firewall (if any)?

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB952709).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

I am running Vista SP1.

My Anti virus suite is Mcafee virusscan plus, latest release. This is an
all-in-one solution offering virusscanner, firewall, anti-spyware etc.

Did the machine come with Vista SP1 preinstalled or did you install it? If
the latter, did you install it via Windows Update or manually?

Can you install the update manually using the download links in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952709 ?

The above notwithstanding, I'd recommend that you open a free Vista SP1
support incident, Henk:

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09

I installed SP1 myself using Windows Update. I have tried installing KB952709
manually but this gives the same result.

Thank you for your support. I will open a support incident.

Ok, so I tried to open a windows vista sp1 incident. But going through the
proces I have to indicate if my copy of windows came preinstalled on the
machine. As it did I answered yes and the kind people of Microsoft told me to
turn to my computer manufacturer. I cannot issue an incident. This to me is
very strange as I have a legitimate copy of Vista, produced by Microsoft. The
fact that it was installed by HP does not changer that. I can understand that
a wrong installation may cause problems, but if I install it myself I may
make the same mistakes. In that case I can issue an incident.

Anyway, this option is apparently not open for me. Does someone have any
other suggestions?
