Vista Enterprise x86, domain member, no WSUS, behind ISA 2004 with new
firewall client installed. ISA requires domain user authentication. Browsing in IE through proxy works fine. Sidebar shows stock tickers and weather (through proxy, using authentication). Tried checking IE proxy automatic configuration checkbox, no change. My computer used to be in an OU with a GPO to disable automatic updates. I received updates until 3/06 (I think that was prior to the GPO). We moved it out of that OU, now all other computers in the same OU as me (but running XP) can use Automatic Updates from Microsoft.com. But on my Windows Update dialog, I see Check for updates is greyed out. I can change settings, etc. I have set local GPO to update automatically, etc. But I should be able to click Check for updates. I periodically get an error balloon that says Windows Updates cannot check for updates. I had numerous issues during beta with Vista trying to do anonymous requests for Windows Update and lots of other things. I chased it for a long time, and never got much response. One response I got from a Microsoft employee was, "oh, you require authentication for _outbound_ requests?? maybe that's why it was non-repro, we don't do that at Microsoft!" It would not surprise me at all if Vista is trying to do this again, either not trying to connect through the proxy or not grabbing my user token to authenticate through the proxy. I emailed support but they wanted me to pay for an incident to troubleshoot what I think is a bug in Windows Update/Vista. As if. The update log says it can't connect to http://rs.update.microsoft.com/odf/v6odf.xml, yet I can connect to that just fine by pasting the URL in IE. I can connect to the cab file listed as well. Note that in the log it appears that it's trying null authentication, it says it could not get a user token, etc. I've added information from the Windows Update log, showing the results from
