Vista checksum error

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and lucked upon the site via a search
engine. I'm having a problem with my computer that no one seems to be
able to help me with and while I've seen similar issues, I have yet to
find a fix. I will explain my issue in detail and many may find it
familiar yet nothing I have found is identical. This computer has ran
rock solid for two years with no hardware changes, save the video card a
few months ago, after which it still ran fine until last week.

So I startup my computer and after the BIOS splash screen and the "RAID
status healthy" message I receive the following message at the top of my
screen:

"File is possibly corrupt. Its header checksum does not match the
computed checksum"

Now, per the instructions I have located thru various searches on the
web I insert my Windows installation disc and when I am prompted to
"Press any key to boot from DVD" I press a (letter) key and this is
followed by a "Loading Windows Files" progress bar.

Once the bar completes I see another screen which states:

======================================
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be
the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your
computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or
computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Status: 0xc0000221

Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or
corrupt.
=======================================

This is all great except the "Windows installation disc" is already IN!
Now at the bottom of this screen it says to hit "Enter to continue or
ESC to exit". Hitting ESC exits the screen and the computer restarts.
Hitting Enter takes me the the next screen which states:

=======================================
Choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool:
(Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press ENTER.)
=======================================
(The only selection is "Windows EMS")

Below this it states:

=======================================
To specify an advanced option for this choice, press F8.
=======================================
And below this section it states:

=======================================
"Tools:"

Windows Memory Diagnostic

=======================================
At this point, selecting "Windows EMS" OR F8 OR TAB-ing to "Windows
Memory Diagnostic" and hitting ENTER, reboots the computer and repeats
this entire dialogue, word for word.

At NO time does the recovery console open. HOW can I repair the file if
I can't get to the Recovery Console? I also tried booting to a "Windows
Vista x64 Recovery Disc" which I downloaded but it doesn't seem to
recognize it as a boot disc at all because when I "press a key to boot
to CD" it takes me directly to the "Checksum" message.

It seems that, at a minimum, I need to get the recovery console to load
in order to replace/repair the file but I'm not having any luck.

It could very well be a corrupt pagefile causing this error, or bad or
incompatible memory. Here area a few links for you to read up on. Make it a
great day.

Impersonating as usual. You are as far from being an MVP as you are from the planet

Yea, that definitely looks like some of the same links that I found. Now
if I could just find one that related to the fix (in Vista hopefully), not
just posts that explain the problem.
Most of the links in the search imply to use the recovery console to fix
the problem but since my underlying issue is that I cannot get the
recovery console (or any other boot disk for that matter) to load, they
simply reiterated what I had in my post to begin with.

If you can't boot to any rescue disk, then you have some hardware failure
unrelated to Windows, possibly with the motherboard. The error message
would seem to indicate this. The answer that "THE C." gave you about the
pagefile was ridiculous.

Do some hardware troubleshooting or, if the computer is still under
warranty, contact the computer mftr.'s tech support.

When you get to this point, make sure you follow through and let the system
repair itself and, while it is doing that, be sure to follow instructions.
All of this can be done without the disk inserted, but if it is, it should
not matter.
And what about SR? Did it come up at any one time?
Also any hardware problems should have been detected.
If you try hard enough you'll find the system will fix itself, it did for
me, even though Dell Support were ready to restore my system to factory
settings, meaning all my data would have been lost.
But that did not happen, thanks to 'Vista'.
Hope to be of some encouragement.

Harry.

Just to reinforce webster72n's advice: I had this sort of experience a time
or two, and the process took what seemed like half the age of the Universe.
Literally a half hour or more, with no sign of any activity (such as an
hourglass or a progress bar).

I'm not sure how or why I managed to wait so long the first time, when I
didn't know what was going on. The next time I had an idea :-)

I had a similar problem this morning. I left the computer on overnight
and it went dormant. When I tried to reboot I got the checksum error
message. I haven't added any new hardware in several weeks, but it did
look like there was an automatic Windows update last night? Could that
have caused a problem? I've tried both the repair and restore, and
neither have fixed the problem.
