When will Microsoft realize that our privacy issues and general use of this
new OS has major problems and is saturated with bugs.

Since I got over the hurdle of the "Counterfeit Issue (aka Not Genuine)", I
am extremely hesitant of this Service Pack 1 for Vista.

Shouldn't there be a law against installing some updates on your machine
without your permission? Oh wait, I forgot, there is one but Microsoft can
get away with it.

Sorry for the rant -- ML

Certain bugs are evaluated as Probably Not Critical. The problem is that
there would never be a release - to escape delay until it's obsolete, they
need to release with bugs. I suppose features also get judged this way.
A popular candidate for a poor evaluation of "finished enough" is UAC.
Since you only license it, and the code running on your computer actually
belongs to Microsoft, respecting your right to possess it presents a challenge.
How to meet that challenge regardless of temptation not to do so? Maybe
they can, if they can bring themselves to evaluate it as Probably Critical.

You have the option NOT to get updates; so what's your problem?

"Shouldn't there be a law against installing some updates on your
machine without your permission?"
Read paragraph 7 of the license, you gave permission when you accepted
the agreement.

The updates that come through when the update features are off are
those need by the Windows Update services to keep the Windows Update
services up to date.
While it would have better if this information had been more clear,
you have agreed to it.

If you want to be sure it does not happen, disable Windows Update
Services.
You may also need to disable BITS.

Update is turned off. Do I need to access the administration menus to shut
down the service for both Update and BITS?

Yes
Start/Run
Type "services.msc" ENTER
Disable them both and you will not get any updates.

Note: Because the services are disabled, Windows Update will not work
at all, manually or automatic regardless the other settings.
You will need to enable the services to use Windows Update to get the
monthly updates or go directly to the source page to download each
update manually.

Disabling the services is NOT recommended.
