I will be looking for a new notebook real soon and was wondering is there
was a place that lists the compatible hardware/softare .
I may need to buy a few thingss for myy current Windows XP, or do I need to
look up each one seperately?

Thanks for any and all help,
Carmen

The notebook should come as Vista compatible with Vista compatible solutions
and hardware.

The mistake people make is thinking that solutions that work on non Vista
O/S(s) are going to work on Vista. Some of it may work. There are
compatibility modes in Vista for running legacy software like Win XP, 2k,
98, 95, etc modes.

http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5175

Some of the stuff that you may install that's non Vista compatible may even
be working, but they could be contributing to other issues that are not
apparent to the user and he or she can't put 2 + 2 together and understand
that what they have installed is causing issues.

I guess what I am saying is Vista is a good O/S. But the hardware and
software vendors have not caught up with Vista. They will catch-up to the
O/S like they did when Win 2K and XP were released.

So, you can play it foot loose and fancy free with installing software on
Vista that's non Vista compliant, right now.

Be a happy Vista user and do the right thing. If you do that, you won't be
crawling back to the NG and saying you're not happy with Vista, and you need
to crawl to XP with your tail between your legs. <g>

Hi Carmen,

If you are trying to see what is compatible with Vista on your current
XP one, then your can download the "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor". It
will give you a good idea of what will and will not work with Vista.
For your other programs and stuff, I would look them up seperately to
see if they are compatible with Vista. They are usually always having
updates on the versions or drivers that might not be up to date on some
list.

'Windows Vista: Upgrade Advisor'

Carmen,

Not sure I'm parsing your post correctly... you're thinking of getting a new
notebook, that seems pretty obvious. But what's with the "I may need to buy
a few things for my current Windows XP..."? How does that relate to buying a
new notebook? Are you talking about software running on your current XP box
that you're not sure will run in Vista?

And, I must disagree with Shawn's reply. (Sorry, Shawn! I know you're a good
guy.) The Windows Upgrade Advisor -may- give you good info on the Vista
compatibility of your applications... and... it may not. I would suggest
that you post exactly which applications you're talking about and you may
get replies from folks who've already dealt with those applications.

Lang,

No sweat. Your right. I should of said "may" and edited as such. It
should only be used as a suggestion not factual. To many factors for it
to be completely accurate.

Thank you,
Shawn

Shawn;
I think of it as an advisor and nothing more.
The fact Advisor is in the name suggests the user has to do more if
good results are desired.

I suggest users verify Windows Vista compatibility with the
manufacturers of their essential hardware and software.

While the Upgrade Advisor is a good tool, it is by no means a magic
bullet for everything and was not intended to be.
The available hardware and software is to varied and changing to
expect more than advice.

I'm still waiting for an answer why my Gigabyte motherboard passed
Microsoft certification and didn't function correctly with SATA drives
until AFTER updating the BIOS. Kind of exposes Microsoft's claimed
"testing" as a scam.

Only a true blue Microsoft fanatic would try to pretend the Upgrade
Advisor is a good tool when it passes a person's system and suggests
it is safe to upgrade to Vista only for the installer to crash on the
very components during the actual install that the Advisor said
wouldn't present any problems.

Come on now. On the Linux lists that of course you adore, they are forever
seeking drivers for video card that Linux cannot supply and who then has to
supply, the manufacturers of course not Linux.

You are just another fanboy dummy. I'm not a Linux fan, however I
acknowledge it is a better designed OS than Windows. The point is I
never once suggested any flavor of Linux or preached people should use
it and never once visited any Linux list as you claim. Come on, you
can lie better can't you?
