I extracted the hard drive from a gateway computer using xp. I want to use
the software and data files with a new HP vista premium OS. Is the hard
drive manufacturer specific? I can' seem to access my application files.

You will need to reinstall the applications...
once you do that, the data will be useable

Hi,

The drives aren't manufacturer specific, but the applications have to be
installed under Vista. You can't just run them from the other drive (which,
by the way, you probably need to take ownership of if you can't access
files/folders on it).

No.

You can move data files from computer to computer, but you can not do
this with applications. The reason has nothing to do with XP vs.
Vista. The problem is that programs are not self-contained, but have
many supporting files and references to where they are, in the
registry and elsewhere. All of that will be missing on the new
computer.

If you want to run the applications that were on your old computer,
you'll need to reinstall them from the original media onto the new
computer.
