Vista Contacts - extended characters import

I am trying to import my Outlook Contacts into the Vista Contacts folder.
Many of the Outlook Contacts have extended characters, e.g. á, é, í, ó, ú,
ñ, etc. The CSV file that I created from Outlook correctly displays the
accented letters and the Spanish "ñ" but when I import the contacts into
Vista Contacts, they display as gibberish.

Importing a vCard works but I have hundreds of contacts and I haven't been
able to save all of them as a single file. Saving and importing them one at
a time would take hours.

How does one import contacts with Spanish and French names?

Have you tried installing Outlook, copying the .pst file over, opening the
..pst, and importing directly into Windows Mail?

The file export from Outlook is not a problem. As I mentioned in my
original post, the CSV file that I created by exporting the contacts from
Outlook is perfectly good. The extended characters are in the CSV file.
The CSV file is a plain text file, no different from any text file produced
by Word, Wordpad, Works, Notepad, WordPerfect or any other word or text
editor. Outlook is not an issue. It is Vista that is not importing the
text correctly.

Vista does not import anything. Programs create files that are imported by
other programs. Vista does the writing and reading of the files but does not
change the content of the files.

I am not interested in importing the .pst file into Windows Mail. I am
trying to import it to the Vista Contacts folder. Vista Contacts however,
has only
four import formats:
CSV (Comma Separated Values)
LDIF (LDAP server)
vCard (VCF file)
Windows Address Book file (Outlook Express contacts)

FYI, on your suggestion, I did import the contacts into Windows Mail and
Windows Live Mail:
same results. The accented letters in names like Fernández, Pérez and
Concepción are displayed as a symbol resembling a square.

I understand that. Outlook, however, is not the problem. I posted it here
because the Contacts folder is new in Vista and, as far as I know, Windows
Mail is new with Vista and, this is a Vista "general" newsgroup. Perhaps I
should have posted this in the microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
newsgroup. I never meant to create any angst by my perception that this
issue was a general problem which presents itself in the mail application
that is bundled with Vista. Geesh.
