Vista continually tries to configure updates and then restarts

Vista starts up normally until it gets to the initial visa screen showing the
"Windows Vista Home Premium" at the bottom of the screen. A message appears
in the centre of the screen saying "Configuring Updates" then "shutting down".
Vista then restarts and continually does this in a loop so I cant use my PC.
Any help welcome. This is a frustrating issue.

See Repair Vista Options. It sounds like Startup Repair is what you need.

Thanks for the suggestion. Fortunately I found a simpler solution on another
posting.

I resolved the issue by changing the name of the folder

c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution to c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution.old

This stopped Vista's vicious circle of continually restarting because it was
seeking to configure updates.

PC is now working fine and is updating fine.

"Hi,

I have the same problem. Trouble is I can't get past the "configuring
updates..." screen to change the folder.

Any Suggestions?

I tried changing the name of the folder but Vista will not allow me to
change the file name! Any ideas what I must do. I am administaror and there
are no other users set up.

You might like this link to MS who say "wait for it to finish" lots of help

Hi
I spent 2 hours with the help desk and am now working.
Call the help desk and reference this number. SRX1055180401ID
These were the steps taken, my pc is now fine.

Action:
You tried to do Windows updates

Result:
***************************
Unfortunately, you were unable to do windows updates as the computer would
freeze when configuring updates

Cause:
**************************
We found that the Windows update registry files had become corrupt

Resolution:
**********************
We deleted the following key from the registry after taking back up
- HKLM\COMPONENTS. PendingXmldentifier, NextQueueEntryIndex,
AdvancedInstallers and able to do Windows updates successfully

FYI - if you can't do the above, change the settings to manually install
updates.
Do one, shut down computer, then another. The hang 'configuring updates'
will go away in about 15min if only one update is being installed. If there
are multiple updates it can take hour to never. I rebooted around 15times
before I was able to get access to the computer so I could call the help desk.
The change of file SoftwareDistribution.old to old, sort of works and is a
good idea. A new bulid of the software distribution will occur. However, it
depends on how bad the corruption is. Make sure you change auto install
updates and deselect the files before you reboot.
Hope this helps.
