I've run the very first alpha release for a little while, had some new
neat features.
One of the things I am really liking the idea of, but I didn't get to test
any of that yet, is the upcoming support for hot pluggable drivers and
monitors in 7.10.
Which basically means it'll finally be able to just switch monitors
without the need to reconfigure and the same goes for drivers.
And, another thing I've been waiting for, due to the hot pluggable
driver support, is that it will finally fall back to a safe driver to use
if the installed driver fails to start. Basically something that can
happen when upgrading video cards for instance.
The restricted driver manager that was introduced in 7.04 is also getting
some upgrades, more drivers, including support for some Winmodems. That
should make wireless much easier I think. I think I might try throwing the
latest Gutsy release on my laptop and seeing if it actually will recognize
the broadcom wireless card out of the box now.
It'll also have built in support for Compiz Fusion. Beryl kicked Aero's
butt but Compiz Fusion kick's Beryl's butt. Now here does this leave Aero...
And that's just some of the major highlights. There'll also be the usual
assortment of upgrades to all the various applications, user interface,
etc.
Is it worth getting? Yes. I am waiting in very high anticipation. =)
