Vista crashed and system restore fails

After installing updates, Vista crashed because a driver, drvmcdb.sys is
missing or corrupt. System Restore fails, and MS tech support seems to want
to charge me $59 for a week-old install.

The Repair option also failed. I'm not sure how to get drvmcdb.sys in the
drivers directory.

Press f8 soon after boot, and choose the 'Last known good configuration'
option

That did not work either.

Try system restore in safe mode (if you haven't already)

Found the problem. I googled drvmcdb.sys and found many others had the exact
same problem as I. After installing Vista, Vista tells you it blocked a
program due to incompatibility and recommends uninstalling the program, Roxio
Sonic DLA. Doing that prevented me from being able to get into Vista at all,
through any manner or mode. I had to go all the way back almost to the
beginning of my system restore points to the point where I had uninstalled
Sonic DLA. Thanks MS, for labelling the restore points! I'm back in Vista.

Couldn't find a patch, and Roxio wants you to buy their program. So I've
just left Sonic alone.

Thanks for your help guys!
