Vista crashes every 50 minutes

I have Vista SP1 running on a Gateway quad-core (model 5478). I have this
problem with my computer where it will run fine, then a set of updates will
install, after which the computer will crash and reboot every 50 minutes.
Right before the crash, the fan will go into overdrive and become very loud.
This problem recurs every 50 minutes as long as I keep the computer on. If I
try to go in to sleep mode or turn the computer off, then just as I am about
to shut down, the fan will again go into overdrive and will stay that way
until I pull the power plug on the computer. A week or so later, a new
update will be installed, and the problem will be magically fixed. But then
it comes back again with the next set of updates.

The last time I had this problem, it lasted for about a month. It started
again last night. I am going to try to restore my computer to a previous
point before the updates and then turn off automatic updates, but I was
wondering if anyone had encountered a similar problem or had any suggestions.

Thanks.

I too have had the same problem and couldn't even get into my hotmail. Today
I can get into hotmail but it still kicks me out when there are updates.
Very frustrating. Can't get into the update page either. Microsoft is
moving us into Live MSN whether we like it or not. They will probably fix
the microsoft update page eventually and so don't miss out on your updates.
It's a process and it's annoying but here are and what's our choice...
Apple?... Have great day and remember in this world economy it's not life or
death. Hang on and I'll try to as well.

PA Bear,

Thanks for the response, but this isn't a matter of cleaning the inside of
the computer. This has gone on for four or five cycles of working and then
not working. The first time it happened, I cleaned the inside of the
computer (which wasn't all that dusty anyway), and it didn't help. This
really is tied directly to the cycle of new Vista updates by Microsoft.

Hi there,

I believe updates for windows have nothing to do with your issue, your cpu
seems to be overheating forcing the sensored fan to run maximum speed and
not being able to cool the processor well cpu overheat forces the system to
shutdown.

Check your cpu cooler for dust/dirt and clean it up. Or check if there is
sufficient and suitable cooler paste between the cpu and the cooler.

Good Luck and best regards,

Michel Denie

Check your cooling fans.

I too had a nearly identical issue with my Dell XPS 1330 Laptop that is
running Vista Ultimate with all the latest updates. Went to Dell and got the
latest BIOS update and that fixed the problem. Perhaps you’re faced with a
similar issue. Best of luck. –Ed-
