Vista Created new, teeny drive

Aloha all. I have a laptop with Vista Home premium. It has a built in back
up drive (D:\). like many systems now. Vista seems to have decided there was
too much space on the backup drive, so it created a new drive (D:\) out of
the empty space. However, this drive is less than 1GB! Is there a way to
remove this new drive and put the space back in either the original backup
drive, or in C:\?
Thanks!

Vista is Microsoft's first OS to have built-in partition resizing

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/1...windows-vista/

but of course you should backup all your data first in case of some major
error.

I think I'd play safe and just leave it alone

You need to have it as free space. If it is a 'drive', delete it. You can
then expand the drive BEFORE it to include the freespace.

That drive D is not a backup drive. It is a Restore drive to restore your
original Windows. You don't backup to it and it doesn't change. You should
leave it alone and check your manual at the computer maker's web site for
instructions on how to use it if disaster strikes. It will return your
computer to "as shipped" condition. Since you already tampered with it, it
might not work.

LMO _ Post "slightly:" confusing to me (not hard to confuse me) you state
"...It has a built in back up drive (D:\)..." and then later "...so it
created a new drive (D:\) out of the empty space. ..." - this infers two "D"
drives - we know this is not so!.

Mary is corrected about it likely being a Restore Partition - evidenced by
the "Hit F11 (or some key)..." at boot to restore. Usually the Laptop OEMs
provide a utility to copy the restore partition contents to removeable media
(CD/DVD) and, in addition, to remove the MBR modification ( Hit F key...) at
the time it was (Partition) created.

Deleting the partition via :normal" means and reclaiming it's space does
not remove MBR modification.

Thank you. Using the Management Console let me delete the newly created
drive, then expand the recovery volume back into it.
