Vista dead after System Restore

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and after installing an update to my
ethernet card that killed my internet connection, I decided to do a
system restore. After the restore, and reboot, Vista came up with an
error/blue screen, and told me to insert my install disc and perform a
repair. I did that, but of course, my DVD-Rom ate the Vista disc,
destroying it.

So, after rebooting once more, I get no prompt to repair. I now get a
black screen, where I can see my cursor and can move it with the
mouse, but absolutely no response from the OS. All I see from the
Vista is when it's booting, I get the green progress bar, but after
that disappears it goes right to the black screen with moveable
cursor.

Does anyone have a clue what's happened? With my DVD drive eating
discs, and unable to boot the OS, I'm really at a loss of what to do.
THANKS!

Where did the update come from? Not from Windows update I hope? If it was
you could be in trouble,

Ignore ignorant Alan. What do you mean the drive 'ate' it. I think you are
a suspect troll.

No, I'm no troll. What I mean is I put the disc in, it started making
odd sounds, I pull the disc out and it's all scratched to hell. I
then put the disc in my laptop, and it can't read it. It's a
Panasonic DVD-rom without a loading tray, but with the style of insert
you see on car stereos. It had been giving me problems recently.

As for the update, it was a Realtek Semiconducters update for my
ethernet card. It was optional update that had been sitting in
Windows Update for some time, and I finally decided to go ahead and
install it. Huge mistake, obviously,

Firstly, this idiot Alpha is calling me a troll, not you. Best to ignore
prats like that and to note who said what!
If youre DVD is damaged to that extent it sounds like it's beyond repair. If
you bought it legally you can get onto MS and get a replacement, as to the
etherrnet card, maybe, not sure,
Alan.

What kind of trouble could I be in since the update came from Windows
Update?

*BUMP (even though bump doesn't really work here)

Please, can anyone posit a theory or two to what happened to my
machine?
