The jury isn't in yet. Three core features of any OS is the ability to
easily and quickly copy/move/delete files. Vista simply sucks at it
for SOME people. The 'why' it only effects some and not others isn't
clearly understood...yet, at lease Microsoft isn't talking but they
have made a couple lame stabs to try to fix it in a hotfix that only
partially works and seems to turn off and on.
It has been speculated it is caused by or at least impacted by new
"features" in Vista including the useless DRM scheme which was
tinkered with, the laughable and all but useless UAC phony security BS
and by the poor, actually laughable design "features" where Vista if
you're using the graphic shell does some very stupid things during
copying/moving and deleting that can slow things to a crawl like
opening excessive handles to process the job. This can be confirmed it
is indeed a Vista problem if you try to copy/move/delete files using
some third party shell or from the command prompt the problem goes
away and copying/moving/deleting files resumes at normal speed.
My guess Microsoft will finally fix it in SP1 and quietly pretend
nothing ever was broken. That's the usual approach Microsoft has taken
over the years.
Things that may help:
A Microsoft hotfix detailed in KB 931770
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931770/en-us
Changing permissions on your hard drives making sure whatever user you
log in as has full permissions to read, write and execute.
While newsgroup idiots like Frank pretend this isn't a problem or that
it is caused by users, you can easily see that's bullshit if you read
at least some of the following very long thread. Interesting to note
WHERE this thread is being discussed and it just one of hundreds of
others like it in forums and web pages all over the web.
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...8057&SiteID=17
Of course fools like Frank routinely deny reality if it conflicts with
their dream world.
While most won't want to wade through 400+ posts some very long in the
above thread, if you do, you'll learn a lot of about this issue and
how common it is. Those more like Frank will just keep on doing this:

That's Frankie sticking his head in the sand so he doesn't see any
Vista problems are real.
