When I try to image the hard drive on my new Dell Vostro 1000 with Vista
Basic, Acronis CD boots but goes to blinking cursor, with no further
activity.

Read something a while back about the Dell recovery partition giving
Acronis problems, but haven't nailed it down. Any help?

Do you have a space on a partition or drive which is large enough to take a
backup? The Dell recovery partition should not be used and is too small
anyway..

Had not planned on installing it, but guess I'll try it, thanks.

Was planning to image it to a LinkStation on my network, which has
worked fine with other computers. There's plenty of space.

I don't see anything in the OP's post about "cloning". The OP wants
to image - IMAGE - the drive. Completely different situation and no
need to disconnect.
