Vista Device Issues

I just got a new computer with 64-bit Vista Home Premium, and am having
some issues with devices.

When I connected my Lexmark X6100 printer, Vista recognized it and even
took me to the website to download drivers, which I then installed.
However, when I bring up Printers in Control Panel, the Lexmark is not
listed. The X6100 also includes a scanner which again Vista found, but it
directed me to the same download as for the printer (not surprising). There
is an entry for the Lexmark X6100 in my Start Menu, but the only option
there is to uninstall the software.

My old computer ran XP Pro and the Lexmark worked perfectly there. There
was even an icon in the system tray that appeared at startup.

A second issue has arisen with my webcam, a Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000,
which Vista also recognized, and there was a prompt which looked as though
it was from the Logitech driver asking for a disk which I did not provide,
because I didn't think it was necessary. The cam also worked well under XP
without any additional software installation.

Vista's Device Manager reports that both devices are working properly, but
I am unable to access either of them.

I also installed a program called PDF Factory which I used as my default
printer on my old computer, and it's working just fine - and it shows up in
my Printer panel.

Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

welcome to the biggest
complaint the "world" has
with vista.

perhaps, win7 will be
improved.

in the interim, you might
try slowing down the usb
speed.

here is how I resolved
a problem I had:

Uninstall the devices, then unplug them
Download, install drivers/setup software from Lexmark site for vista, run
this setup file and connect the printer when it prompts. Or use the Lexmark
setup cd
Bad move to obtain drivers from MS Update for any none MS hardware

Good news and not so good news..

For your Logitech webcam go to the Logitech website, and download Vista 32
compatible software which will presumably include the webcam control applet.

News on the printer front is not so good. Can you see the printer if you
select 'print' in WordPad or any program which outputs to a printer? If you
can, that is as good as it gets because your friends at Lexmark have not
produced Vista compatible software officially..

It's pretty much standard practice that USB printers, scanners and webcams
require their drivers to be pre-installed before connecting the device to
the computer. That includes the Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000, in both XP and
Vista. The only reliable exceptions are those devices for which MS provides
legacy drivers. For everything else either the device manufacturer supplies
the drivers for it or else the device isn't supported in a particular OS.

Having used XP Pro for a long time, I was used to being able to access the
webcam from My Computer. Such appears not to be the case in Vista.

However, when I installed Windows Live Messenger and ran the audio and
video setup, WLM found my webcam instantly. I even have access to pan and
zoom features which in XP I only had when I used Logitech's bloated cam
software.

Tom

If Logitech had taken the trouble to write all of the software for your
webcam, you would still be able to use it as you could in XP.

Logitech have not done this (and it is solely their responsibility) because
they want you to buy a NEW one..

I have the same camera... well perhaps not exactly the same model revision
but a QC Pro 5000 in any case. Installed in both XP and Vista 32bit. The
camera was originally detected and installed in Vista sure enough but as a
different model (QC Fusion). Whether any part of that driver worked with
this camera I didn't bother to find out since I intended to install
Logitech's Vista drivers anyway. I'd installed Vista on speculation,
expecting to spend most of my time in XP MCE, but as it happens I almost
never use XP since putting Vista on the computer. Since you mentioned it
though I do remember the QC Pro 5000 showing up in Explorer in XP just as
you described. Never had a use for that.

Looking in the list of Logitech drivers present in my Vista the only two
that show up for the QC Pro 5000 are the 11.0.x and 11.5.x Logitech drivers
from mid-late 2007. Logitech has a 64bit driver package available for
download. It does at least look as if the QuickCam utility can be
uninstalled on its own without also removing the webcam drivers.
