vista does not detect proper drivers automatically even though it can.

Vista can never find drivers on its own.

Common scenario:

1) Plug in device via USB
2) Vista will search for drivers via windows update first
3) When that fails, it says to insert driver disc
4) If a driver disc is not an option, I click "Browse my computer for driver
software"
5) I type search c:\ and check 'include subfolders'
6) Vista inevitably (and always) finds the drivers somewhere on my hard
drive and installs the device, even though I never ran an install disc or
did a preinstall for the device.
7) Some devices (like my IDE to USB hard drive enclosure) contain several
components, and I need to run steps 1-6 (above) for each component to make
everything work properly.

This is a stark contrast to what I used to do before my vista upgrade:

XP Common scenario

2) windows will search its own pool of drivers and install the drivers
automatically without any prompts.

When that problem occurs in XP, it's often due to bad data in a particular
registry key. The key looks the same in Vista. Check that the value of
DevicePath in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
is %SystemRoot%\inf

You might also try directing Vista to the \Windows\inf folder when it first
prompts for a driver first to check if this is an issue.

Please stop suggesting linux, it is not a viable option for me at this
point.
I am using my computer for media center purposes, and there is nothing that
linux
can do for me in that dept. Neither do I have the time or the position to
learn
a whole new operating system. Neither do I have the options to 'WRITE MY OWN
DRIVERS'
for hardware that is not compatible with linux yet.

Please stop pestering this forum, I am aware of ubuntu, it is not an option
considering my needs.

I would appreciate if everyone clicked 'I agree' for my suggestion, this
seems to be
a problem that continues even with all the latest updates.

Thanks for the heads up, I do not have any new hardware I can test it out
with, but
I'll be formatting soon when I install my new hard drive so I'll give it a
shot then and
