Hello,

For whatever reason Vista does not go into sleep mode when I set the
balanced mode in the power option screen. It does shut off the monitor in 15
min, but it does not go to sleep after the 1 hour, which is the setting. Is
there any way to see what prevents it to do so? It does not go to sleep even
if I do not have any program running (or running only Firefox or IE, for
example). It was not always so, but after some official windows update,
Vista changed behavior. Unfortunately I do not remember which update it was,
it was approximately 3-5 month ago, when it happened.

It does go to sleep mode through the sleep button in start menu.

Any idea what can I do?

Vista Home Premium, Clean install
Some programs installed (games, Nero ultra and other)
E6600, 2GB RAM, 8800GTX, RAID 0 (intel matrix) Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo,
Creative X-FI Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty

Hi MxM,

You might go through this troubleshooting guide for sleep mode problems
to see if it will help you find the problem. You might take a look at
step 4 to see what is enabled to wake the computer up and disable any
suspects as a test in step 5.

Thanks for the link. Though it did not help, I have started experimenting
myself. I think I found that in my case in advanced settings for Power
options, Hard Disk/Turn off hard disk after, if the setting is set to
"Never", then it does not sleep (which kind of make sense, however, before
it was fine to keep it on "Never", it would still go to sleep).
Unfortunately I do not want to set any time in this setting, because
computer start switching off the hard disks even if I work on it, just do
not access the for some time, which leads to the delay when I do want to
access it.

In any case, I think I need to confirm my findings, and I will post here
again. Each testing takes quite some time before computer goes to sleep, so
it is not that fast...

Ok MxM,

I'll be looking forward to your results.

Unfortunately I was wrong. I think that it is "allow computer to sleep when
sharing multimedia" setting that gave me problem. I do not no why, but if I
do not allow computer to sleep here, it does not go to sleep at all, even if
I do not share anything (like if I have restarted computer and not running
even a single program). Strange.

May be this is because of home networking, and when somebody uses other
computer, it logs into the same network so this computer thinks that the
other computer uses it, even when it is not?

In short I have no good idea why that setting behaves this way.

MxM,

Well, it's good to know that it will work with that setting set that
way. Did you check to see if changing the "Power Management" tab
settings for the network device to:

1. Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer"
2. Check "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

help any?

See Step Five here:

There where like this anyway. Look, I do not know for sure that it is
network related problem, I just know that if I do not allow computer to
sleep in the multimedia settings in advanced power settings for the plan,
then it does not go to sleep even if I just have restarted the computer.
(well, at least this is the only difference now in the settings, I did play
with my mobo settings as well, and I returned everything back, except I do
not allow any device to power on computer, when the power is off. Before,
the keyboard could do that. But since we are not talking about powering it
on/off, but going to sleep, this should be irrelevant right?)

Anyway, if I find something new I will post here again. So far the computer
goes to sleep by itself, first time in 3 months

BTW, could it be somehow related with some program periodically checking
internet for different reasons (like for the weather)?

Allowing the computer to turn off the device in the Power Management
tab helps assures that the device will not wake up the computer while
it's in sleep mode.

A program or event could wake up the computer if it was set to do so in
Task Scheduler or in the program itself. You can check the options
under the "Conditions" tab in Properties for the event in Task
Scheduler.
