Vista does not save desktop settings

I apologize if this is a repeat question, but I have not been able to find
the answer.

My XP computer crashed and bought new one with Vista (64 bit).

I cannot get desktop settings to save. I arrange my desktop icons where I'd
like them AND change my 2nd monitor to extend to the left (instead of
mirror), and when I log off and log back on, the icons are re-arranged to the
left and my 2nd monitor to back to "mirror".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's a free third party program for desktop organization that ws listed
in (I think) the PC Magazine online version (they stopped printing the
paper version!).

It's called Fences. I downloaded it but I haven't tried it yet.

Also Google for desktop managers and desktop savers.

I used to use one, many years ago (maybe 10 or 15), but I eventually
decided to stop caring that much - and I have 78 icons on my desktop as we
speak :-)
