Regarding "... - Tried booking from a Vista startup disk..." - was this a
Vista DVD? If you can boot from the Vista DVD, select the repair option
fromt he initial setup screen - the first repair option will be the
"Recovery Console" - ignore and proceed - setup will notify you that it has
found a windows installation and ask if you wish to repair it - select yes
and setup will continue. The repair is actually an upgrade installation.
If setup does not indicate it has found a Windows installation your option
is a clean install.

My bad, it wasn't a Vista disk, I don't have one (how annoying is i
that you buy a computer and are not given the disk of the OS you'v
pretty much paid out for?!

I had to download a Vista recovery disk
'Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files
(http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

Would this still work

No it will not work. Depending on the make of your computer there is a hidden
recovery file on your system Call the manufacturer or the store where you bought it
and ask them how to access it without a installation disk.
Failing the above bring your computer to a repair shop and not to a big store or
Geek Squad.
